Mady Sieracki’s photographic self-portraits capture the complexities of the mind and the world around her.

She mostly works within a black and white aesthetic that emphasizes the dramatic lighting and shadows that are consistent with the elimination of color. Sieracki is able to convey personal and universal feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and depression by using slow shutter speeds. To bring closer attention to these feelings, Sieracki utilizes the encaustic process, a historical technique of painting wax onto a wood-mounted photograph pulling the viewer closer to see what is really going on behind the layer of wax thus digging deeper into the mind. Inspiration for her work comes from a fascination with the way the human mind can react to challenging situations in life, a concept that she continues to express in her work.

Sieracki currently resides in Northern Virginia.
